The Substance

Director Coralie Fargeat's unflinching commentary addresses the demanding standards for feminine aesthetics as well as the feared consequences of ageing. Hollywood star Demi Moore presents a brilliant acting turn in the role of Elisabeth, an aging celebrity forced into hosting an aerobics show on TV. Edged out by her deceitful superior Harvey, she seeks out a secretive and terrifying treatment called "The Substance". This generates a new version of herself named Sue, leading to an increasingly parasitic dynamic between them. This Friday, the streaming service Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10

This suspenseful story includes the talented actress playing Laura, a skilled journalist who takes a hiatus from writing about global conflict to board an opulent ship alongside an ailing Norwegian shipping heiress and donor, her husband, plus additional affluent passengers. Yet once an unknown lady falls into the sea overnight and the entire crew insists she wasn't real, the reporter's sleuthing skills take over. Available now, on Netflix

Presence Film

Soderbergh pushes his directorial skills in this innovative paranormal narrative captured wholly through the eyes of the phantom. As a family including mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe moves into their fresh home, the filming device – AKA the Presence – follows them around. Chloe seems aware of the poltergeist, and it looks like protective of her. However, the motive remains? It's a fun idea that remains concise, including a revelation that may be unexpected. This Saturday, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema Premiere

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

Cage wholeheartedly adopts his eccentric image via this autobiographical spoof. He acts as a self-obsessed celebrity named Nicolas Cage who agrees to a $1m payday to attend a celebration in Mallorca for the wealthy Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Contacted by the CIA to investigate the suspected cartel boss, Cage's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” proves useful. Saturday 11 October, evening, on Channel 4

The Black Phone

Derrickson's locked-room horror remains effective without requiring a continuation. Taking place in 1970s Colorado, multiple child abductions has made the youth on edge. Once Finney is kidnapped by the villain and imprisoned in a cellar, he fears the worst. But the disconnected phone in the room repeatedly calls, with eerie communicators offering help, and the intuitive nightmares of his sister Gwen might rescue him. A solid creepfest. October 11th, nighttime, on Film4

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the battle between God and Mammon, it's a knockout win for greed in Michael Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top biopic regarding the shamed TV preacher and her felon spouse. The actor plays the venal Jim, who declares at the beginning, asserting religious justification for riches. Both individuals commence capitalizing on the American public's spiritual convictions. It's a riot of tacky decor, bad makeup and insincerity, yet the lead actress achieves to depict the character as a sympathetic figure. Tuesday 14 October, early morning, on Film4

Black Bag

This period's second offering from Steven Soderbergh is a spy mystery as tight similar to the collars used by the actor's UK spy. He receives a mission with uncovering a double agent within their ranks from five suspects – one of whom is his spouse. Each performer are experts of calm composure, leading to a delightful psychological game of deception or honesty develops. The supporting cast take part the intelligent intelligence fun.
